UQUAM ULTRACOLD QUAMTUM MATTER

Peter Zoller, University of Innsbruck

P. Zoller at the University of Innsbruck provides the link between atomic physics and theoretical quantum optics, and many-body quantum physics including quantum gases and quantum information, in close collaboration with experiment. His work includes pioneering proposals for quantum simulation of Hubbard models with cold atoms and molecules in optical lattices, and various schemes for quantum computations and gates from trapped ions to Rydberg gates with neutral atoms, all of which have been successfully realized in experiments. He recently introduced ideas in the emerging topic of open system quantum simulation, where dissipative in addition to Hamiltonian dynamics is engineered, adapting quantum optical techniques to a many-body context. He will be responsible for the theory part of Hamiltonian engineering, including Rydberg atoms, long-range interactions and (dynamical) gauge fields, open system dynamics and reservoir engineering, measurement tools, and quantum information aspects.
